A drive around lake Minnetonka can always provide several great and inspiring photos, Dry docked boats covered with snow always seem so lonely to me, then you look out over the frozen lake and see a lone fish house, it some how looks full of life showing the life cycle of the lake the change of seasons and the brutal temperature conditions we in Minnesota endure.

I think it was 1992, I pull these pics out all the time I have probably posted them on this blog in the past and will again, it was such a good time it is worth revisiting now and again, ST. Paul has built one other Ice castle since 92 and it was also a nice one, it was harder to get photos of because of its location and it had giant screen TV's built into the ice that kind of took away any creative details most pictures could show.

Sky Ridge on Baker Road in Minnetonka is a real nice little park, I am not sure if it is open to all public, I walked through about noon on this day during the week and felt welcome to take photos, it looked like a wonderful place to shoot Senior or engagement photos. It will be real nice this fall and it also was a good place for birding I will be back early in the day or near dusk for some bird shots.

Photo opportunities are bountiful around the lake Minnetonka area, I have followed the seasons, the colors and the people around the lake and the photos always seem to tell a story. watching the local papers and internet search, photo contest and new gallery openings can often be found if that happens to be your venue.

Today this young man learns to bait his own hook and even take his fish off of the hook.

Berry Pickers

Delight

Berries are in perfect harvest stage fore picking along the Gunflint trail just out side of Grand Marais. My wife Gracie and I were hiking to the Magnetic rock about 30 miles North West of Grand Marais when we noticed a bountiful view of Raspberries and then noticed people off of to the side of the path picking Blueberries by the bucketful, this trail walks through the BWCA burnout area and is just now coming back to life with new ground growth with pine, birch and aspen trees and lots of berries of every kind.

Most of the berries along the trail are ripe and ready for picking, we still found many berries at various young and mature stages.

Bring containers, we were limited to our camel back water bottle we use for hiking.

Don’t delay, berries wait for no one. When they are ready they are either picked or drop to the ground.

The Cherry Spoon, I think one of the most photographed things in the Twin Cities area. For this shot I left the tripod in the car, it was nearing dusk and I wanted to walk with the camera, so I walked around the whole pond and took photos from every angle, with the sun quickly setting this angle turned out to be the most inviting, and other than having dust in my camera lens I am very pleased with this photo.

Opportunity knocked so I took the photo, I was taking some photos at dusk under the 35W Mississippi river bridge crossing and these three bikers pulled up one level above me under the bridge lights, so I asked if I could take their picture with the lights as a background, they were very willing.

I follow flickr twincities. Twice a month they have a photo competition, I usually enter depending on the subject. One of the last competitions was photos of Iconic Target. I really don't enter to win I enter because it helps me learn how to shoot photos of different subjects and it helps give direction as to what other people see on the same subject. I like to see one subject many different ways and that is what the competitions accomplish for me.

Hopkins theater is lit up most nights until about 10:00 P.M. for good photos.

Minnesota landscape arboretum is one of my favorite places to walk and take photos, my wife purchased a family and friends pass this year and I do believe that it is money spent wisely for entertainment value and for a good cause.

Spring Summer and Fall have been great and from the last walk I took with my daughter on October 26 I can see that autumn is not an end it is a beginning and now I can hardly wait to go back for the next season, the season of November when things out side are quiet and the wind and cold can seem bitter or sweet autumn colors are fading into winter grays and the rustling of squirrels can sound earth shattering in those woods and meadows. Now those hidden deer are easier to see and the time spent outdoors is so much more appreciated.

Drive In's in the metro area seem to making a come back. Galaxy in St Louis Park opened this spring, it sits in the location of the old Wagner drive in along the south side of HWY 7 between Texas Avenue and Louisiana, they did a wonderful job with the decor and I am waiting patiently to view this on a snowy night to so the illumination in the clouds with snowy foreground or back drop. The Minnetonka Drive In has been around for many years it is in Spring park on Shoreline Drive and is a beautiful drive any time of year specially in the fall with the colors and if you are a trail biker, walker, hiker or skater, this drivein is with in walking distance of the Dakota Rail Trail, and it is recomended along with Scotti B's in Mound for for a pit stop along your treck

The crane shot originated in Brooklyn park with the carnes and construction at 81 and 169 I thought adding the drive in to the scene added interest to the photo.

Walking the Dakota Rail Regional Trail Dakota Rail Map was a breath of fresh air for my wife and I, we are accustomed to walking the inner suburbian trails, they are also very nice just the ones we usually walk are short in distance, the Dakota rail trail paved path is 13.5 miles, we started in St, Bonnie and walked to Mound 4.5 miles this took us a little under two hours, we walked about two blocks from the trail into town and ate lunch at Scotty B's restaurant, we both had the Black and Blue salad and were we happy with it. Thinly sliced steak over a bed of Romain with french onions and blue cheese sprinkled over the top. we then had to decide if we wanted to walk further torwards Navarre or or walk the 4.5 back to our car in St, Bonnie. We decided to head back to the car and the next time to park in Mound at the parking ramp and the walk torwards Navarre up to Brown Rd I think it is listed under Wayzata address.

I am always hesitant to ask if I can take some ones photograph. This Bag pipe player was waiting for a service at Fort Snelling when I drove by, I came back and asked if it would be OK if I took his picture and he said sure you can, he asked if I was a photographer and I said mostly by hobby. I then went to the east hill to get photos of planes landing and taking off, I could hear him playing in the background, very somber.

One folder in my computer contains many images from this centuries changing business climate, unfortunately most are not good changes. some of the changes will make the surviving companies stronger and many changes have eliminated competition and this is not good for us the consumer. documenting these changes in photographs is a hobby of mine and every so often I will donate my images with descriptions to the local Historical Societies.

Denny Hecker went down with a splash, the faltering economy could not support a dealership built on credit, even though this empire's business was selling credit for cars and houses.

Circuit City closed leaving the door wide open for Best Buy and even Best Buy is having problems of same type, Walmart announced they were revamping all stores to compete in the electronics area.

Snyders, now only the franchise stores are left open, I will miss Snyders and the Union will too, they are the only Union Pharmacy store in the Twin Cities and if you are from this area, this is most likely where your prescriptions were filled over the years.

All that is left to say is wow, Tom Petters in prison really the company closed, after they bought fingerhut, Sun Country airlines they opened these wharehouse stores all on a imaginary business front sold to defrauded investors, every one lost in this deal.

Lady bird is back, I thought maybe she had the bird flu, if she did she has recovered gracefully, I have not seen her trailing Mr. bird lately so maybe they had a tiff, or spring has not yet sprung here in the Twin Cities. This photo was taken through my kitchen window facing one of the feeders in my backyard. Again the temp is dropping and the winds are picking up, so I shoot from inside and plan for another day of shooting outside. The setting I am thinking of is for a black and white of lone trees in the fog, I heard on the news that in some areas of Minnesota they are pulling the big trucks off the road because of high winds, I hope the winds diminish before I start work at 5:00 P.M. tonight. I think before I finish work tonight around 2-5 A.M. the temps will be around -6 to -15

-21 It was pretty early when I got the call 0n my cell phone, I couldn’t believe it myself, and I heard the forecast -21. The caller on the phone in heavy whimsical voice almost sounded like he was singing, The weather outside is delightful, it is better than inside where the fire is frightful, I’m thinking now who is this crazy person trying to convince me the weather is delightful? It must be one of my ice fishing friends. Over here the voice said, come on out, it isn’t going to get any better than this, he said in the most excited and gleeful voice. Now I know who has that missing cell phone I lost when shoveling on a warmer day!

I thought it was interesting that I saw this same sign on the news. Circuit City, is pulling the plug closing all stores.
Comp USA pulled out of the Midwest downsizing their company to less than half of what it once was. Cost Plus World Market is having trouble. I think and hope Michaels is doing good, at least I haven't heard otherwise, I have haerd Office Depot is having problems. Glad I'm not the land lord for Circuit City plaza.

I usually get mad because so many squirrels come to the feeder, today I kind of have a new respect for them, fighting for survival in -18 degree temps facing more snow coming, they seem to really be loading up on any thing they can find.

Along side Hwy169 in New Hope Mn is this sign for Al Franken that is about 40 feet up in a tree, it is pointed at the freeway, about 100' up the road from this Al Franken sign stands a shrine to the Virgin Mary. Only in Minnesota on a cold winter night I thought to my self, can the prayers of a comedian be heard.

I had to use the mono pod so this didn't come out as clear as I wanted, This is a shrine I pass almost every evening on my way back to the shop. This shrine is located along Highway 169 in New Hope MN by Medicine Lake, I've always wondered about it and now that I have looked closer I can tell it is well maintained, Down the street about 150 feet is a Franken for senate sign up in the tree about 40 feet up. that will be tomorrows photo. I wonder how long it will stay up in the tree now that he has been declared the winner. The Mary shrine was nice and peaceful, the owners have done a nice job with it.

We were worried of computer glitches turning into the year 2000 we thought clocks would stop and all PC's would be disabled because they were not programed to read time after 1999 or 00 was not programed into the computer clocks or calendar. We never thought of Recession or Depression caused by - well we all have our reasons as to what has caused today's closures. Republicans blame Democrats and Democrats blame Republicans, President Bush says no not me this was here before he took office eight years ago. We look to new leadership to to give us hope to bail us out. Will it work, we can only hope.

It has taken several years for this property to transform into a useful entity again, It used to be 215 Excelsior Blvd, that address changed when Hwy 169 came through and took some of the property. At one time it housed the Hopkins post office ran by Harley Hopkins his family also lived in the house, it then was sold to Red Owl and they built there corporate offices and warehouse on the property, then SuperValu used it for several years, in the last few years Opus took over the property and has built three large office buildings, The first pictured here will house Cargill offices and there is a building to the West that is almost finished and another building to the East that they just started the iron work on, I do not know who will occupy the other two buildings. see Red Owl collection

About 300 miles to our north is my favorite town Grand Marais, food and dining is great. Scenery is of the best around and the hiking trails go for miles and are very accommodating for all levels of hikers. If your hobby happens to be photography, hiking, kayaking, eating fine food, book reading, talking to interesting people, or even just driving to the scenic sights this little gem of a town is a great place.

These photos were taken at the 2007 Minnesota state fair, The bird house is something people always tell me about, I collect Red Owl memorabilia and several times a year people I meet will tell me where they have seen one of these bird houses around town. Finally in 2007 my wife and I made it to the fair and to Bill Morgan’s store “Billy’s” I took a photo and my wife, bought a bird house, she felt after all our efforts to see this amazing work of art and craftsmanship that we just had to have one.

This second photo is one from the arts building at the state fair it won a ribbon, I felt it should have taken 1^st place, it did take 1st in my book.

The fair starts soon, one of my daughters and I have entered photos in the art show contest, we are in suspense to see if we even place, they don’t take all the photos entered, and we are curious and anxious to follow the process.

Shooting again at night, I really enjoyed this spot in St Paul. I have seen day shots of Mickey’s also and they are equally as nice the color in the day of the diner is fantastic. Parking in the evening is easy on street if no events are going on, otherwise it can be tough.

If you ever want a sunset with a theater in the foreground, this would be the one , they turn the lights on early and it faces east so you can catch a nice sun set behind it with the lights on. This was taken about 10:30 A.M. I will return to get the Sunset shot, I have seen it when I couldn't take a photo because of other obligations.

Walking this park near the old Cedar Avenue Bridge was an unexpected adventure, I spent about two hours taking some photos and walking and exploring. Along the path at one end I found a pair of tennis shoes at the other end of the path I found a pair of flip flops, I am not sure as to what happened to the owners of these shoes, I could understand losing one shoe, like one falling out of a carrier bag like you purchase at the store to save the environment. These were two fully intact nicely placed pairs of shoes and the tennis shoes were still tied. I figured either Loch Ness or T-Rex and since I returned without a photo of ether of them, I came up with this theory –You will have to fill in the blanks.

If you have a day or at least an afternoon, morning or evening this stretch of Concord Blvd between 66^th and Bryant is a great place to explore with a camera, I was on foot and car, it would have been perfect instead if I was on a bike, Lots of wild life, Flowers, old and new bridges. You can get great shots of Planes, Helicopters and other air craft landing and taking off from this location just north of Bryant.

The city of St Louis Park offers many good photo ops also. Especially if you like neon and retail settings, SLP offers many one of a kind independent retailers Excelsior boulevard or West Lake street one in the same, runs east and west and because of its variety is a good location to shoot photos almost any time of day, I like it at dusk or shortly after, again because many retailers have nice neon and other attractive light and window displays.

This fun shot is taken from Randolph rail bridge just off Shepard Rd, St Paul. It is looking to the East shot in early evening. We parked at the bottom of the hill in a small driveway to a vacant building. about A 1 block walk.

This old bridge is located in Bloomington south of 100 at the very end of Normandale Blvd. Follow Normandale south all the way, it turns to the left after I think after River Bluff Estates gate, follow it down to dead end, (I parked on curb of street) Follow path about two blocks.

You can also get some good photos of other river activeties from this location and I think it would be a good early morning birding spot.

Downtown Hopkins has a lot of photo ops, and is active in arts, it also is desirable for its mix of new and old buildings.
Main street runs east and west so most buildings face North or South.

Between Hwy 100 and Pen Ave on the West side of Minneapolis there is an old Con Agra Mill It has a flowing creek behind it and is rich with photographic history.
I parked in the parking lot easy access, the building is posted private property, I did not see other signs for the surrounding area so I did a walk around the outside of the building and it was cool.

A small hole in the wall allowed for this shot I just stuck my camera in and pumped up the flash, I was surprised that all of this stuff is still in a vacant abandoned building.

Shooting at night, is both challenging and addicting. This theater sits at 694 and 252 in Brooklyn Park, MN . I first thought it would make a good sunset shot, and it still will seeing as how it faces the East and you would have the sun set behind the building, Just at this time of year May into June I haven't seen the lights come on the building until the sun has set so it will be one to try around fall when they set the clocks behind.

It truly is a great pass time watching planes take off and land, it can be frustrating trying to get a good picture it seems like they change runways depending on a number of circumstances, ie., wind, air traffic, or just any reason. So once you think you have good photo taking vantage point it all changes, like the wind. This photo was taken about 1-2:00pm I would like to make it out early evening or early morning once to try and get away from some of the smog and harsh sunlight.

Capturing the Sun on North and South Exposures is real tough, A compass can help predict for a re shoot as to what time to come back. Early Morning or early evening.
These photos were shot at about 1:00 P.M. I think the one of Hwy 52 Bridge or Hwy 3 as Slinger calls it! could be caught later in the afternoon as you can see just a little sun catching the bottom edge on the right.
Is this Robert Street? Even by the compass I can't guess when to shoot this with a little sun hitting the north side of the bridge. If any one figures it out or captures the sun let me know.

Rosemount MN,UMORE Park has two sets of these photographic stacks I prefer the ones that do not have the middle one shortened.
Shadow brought his camera too, and kept up with Grandpa.
This is the set with the short stack.
Hundreds of columns stand in this field. Many old structures remain from this plant built in the 40's Not sure what any of them are. but they make for some interesting photos.

From St Anthony Parkway and Ridgeway Parkway Foreground Bldg is CW lofts. Easy parking again from wayside park. Makes beautiful night shot. Or good day shot on a smog free day.

Farview Park

Looking to the South East from this really big hill off of Lyndale and 29th avenue. Good easy parking at the park. Be prepared to walk a hill no matter where you park. The view is worth the walk. This photo was shot from the right of 1st bench-you will see when you get there.

Last Summer 2007 I spotted this Osprey nest on top of the light post in the South East corner of 62 and 169 I think that corner is Edina, I think Minnetonka is the North West Corner and Eden Prairie is the South West corner. Anyways this spring 2008 I've noticed something else is nesting on this light post, it might still be Osprey, as I was driving by and didn't get a real good look.

St Anthony Pkwy by University ave, Minneapolis. Shooting from bridges is a favorite of mine it usually provides easy access and public property so it just seems less invasive than some other hard to get to locations. This bridge is located over a Minneapolis rail yard and provides easy access for shooting photos. City shots can also be taken from this area but some views are obstructed.

This photo is shot from River Rd East just off of East River Parkway north of 94 from on top of the hill, Looking to the north West, this would be a good location if you would like a shot of the Sunsetting over Minneapolis.
